Getting Organized

One of the big challenges in retirement is figuring out what your new schedule is going to look like.  That could mean anything from being very regimented and structured, to letting yourself float through the day with no time-boundaries.

In my first post I mentioned I was having anxiety dreams about schedules.  I am clearly a person who likes some structure to my day.  I like to plan and think ahead to what I want to accomplish in the coming days.  What I don't like, however, is lying awake at night thinking about the things on my to-do list!

So here is a tip that can help to a) turn your mind off at night, b) make sure you keep track of your to-do list and ideas, and c) help organize yourself.  Buy a nice notebook and jot down your ideas, plans, chores.  Once they are out of your head and on to paper, they lose the power to keep you up at night!

Plus, if you are like me, you will have brilliant ideas that you can not recall two days later.  Jot them down in your notebook/journal, and they are there for later.

This past week I have been in Quebec City helping my sister, who broke her wrist. (Note - one of the benefits of retirement is that you can pick up and go help your sister, with no worries about missing work!)  We went for a walk down Rue Cartier, which is a lovely street with unique shops, and stopped in at Ketto Design where I bought this lovely notebook.  Check them out at www.kettodesign.com, or better yet drop in to this very pretty shop next time you are in Quebec City!

Of course, you may prefer to use an electronic notebook, which is fine.  The idea is to be able to quickly and easily record your thoughts, and to be able to look back over what you have accomplished.

So, back to the question of how much to schedule yourself - I confess I have not figured that out yet.  The best advice I can give so far, is to take time to see what suits you.  And in the meantime, enjoy the day!
